Melody

Music player and tag editor for Linux and macOS.

Playback runs in an engine, melodyd, on your desktop or on a server. The desktop app melody, the Android app and the command line all control the same engine. Closing the app doesn't stop the music.

A

Playback

  1. Engine and clients melodyd keeps the library, queue, playlists and play history. The desktop app, the Android app and melody-cli connect to it locally or over the network.
  2. Outputs Play on the engine's machine, on another computer or Raspberry Pi running melody-agent, on an Android phone, or on a UPnP renderer. Volume and ReplayGain are set per output.
  3. Listen together Host a room and friends play the same tracks at the same time from their own libraries. Tracks they don't have are sent from the host. Guests without Melody can listen in a browser.
  4. Playlists Grouped by album, with covers. Saved playlists are files in your playlist folder. Dynamic playlists come from search queries or Last.fm.
  5. Keyboard A command palette lists every menu entry. Quick album and Quick track search the library as you type.
  6. Gapless, ReplayGain, scrobbling The engine plays gaplessly, applies ReplayGain and scrobbles to Last.fm, also when no client is open.
  7. Android Remote control, playback on the phone and albums kept for offline listening.

Tagging

  1. Tag editor Edit any number of files at once. Changes are previewed before they are written and can be undone until the editor is closed.
  2. MusicBrainz Identify finds the release, lists the other versions of the album and matches files to tracks. It works on several albums at once and can fetch covers.
  3. ReplayGain, conversion, renaming Scan any format Melody can decode. Convert to Opus and other formats. Rename and move files with formatting expressions.
  4. Library The engine watches the music folders. Moved or renamed files keep their playlist entries, ratings and history.
  5. Plugins External programs in any language, called with JSON. They can add menu entries and side panels, or run on events such as new albums. Included: lyrics from LRCLIB, an artist and album info panel, web search and shell commands.
